How to clean a bolt action gun barrel?
How do you guys clean your bolt action benchrest rifles? Would you a .30 jag for a .308 barrel? What cleaning rods and solvents do you guys like. I want to keep the barrel accurate and in good shape. thanks in advance.
.30 caliber brushes and patches for a .308
I use a cleaning box that holds the gun for me. Make sure it's unloaded!!!
Take out the bolt and from the cleaning end run a brass brush, then patches with solvent three times, then a dry patch, then lube.
Use the breech end method whenever you can. Even a plastic coated rod can screw up your muxxle crown.
I use corrosive ammo in a lot of my old guns, so the first patch is an ammonia and water solution, then a dry patch, the solvent.
Solvent of choice is Hoppe's 9 and then Break-Free CLP. I also use Boresnakes a lot these days, unless it's real dirty.
