Difference between double action and single action?
What's the difference between a double action pistol and a single action pistol? Are all semi automatics double action pistols?
Double Action: Pulling the trigger both cocks the hammer, and then releases it.
Single Action: Pulling the trigger simply releases the hammer, it must be c.ocked manually (can be from pulling it back yourself, or from the action of the gun).
My Sig P226 can function in both Double and Single action mode. For the first shot, it is double action, pulling the trigger cocks the hammer and then release it. When the first round is fired (and each consecutive round), the slide rides back on the frame cocking the hammer. Now when the trigger is pulled, all it has to do is release the hammer. Or, if I choose, I can decock the hammer and use it in double action mode again. There are also Double Action Only versions of the P226 though. You can get a semi-auto any type (double, single, or double action only) type.
Revolvers are (almost always) double-action.
Single action generally has a lighter trigger pull as pulling the trigger doesn't have to do as much work.
f0ur2one: You just described Double Action and Full Auto. Guns capable of full auto fire are all single action. You have no idea what you are talking about.
