what exactly is a gun dog?
or a bird dog? I'm not sure which its called.
I have a golden retriever, and I want to trian her to be a bird dog, but I have no clue where to start, I live in a small town so trianers are out of the question, I know people trian their bird dogs temselves, and thats what I want to do. so if anyone could give me any tips, like what exactly are they supposed to do, ect.

How old is your dog? You need to introduce you dog to water and insure him that water is good and fun an that playing in it is rewarded. You need to teach you dog the basic commandsl like sit and stay(you should know how to teach that!). Introduce you dog to decoys and the scent of waterfowl. Make sure he knows the difference between a real duck(or whatever your hunting) and a decoy. Practice daily and go over these things. Make sure you always reinforce positive behavior with positive reinforcement.
Get a decoy and attach a scent to it and throw it into the water and tell him to fetch. When done(patience, may take awhile) make sure you reward him GREATLY! Expose him to real hunting situations prior to being taken to the fields. In order to perform around guns he needs to be introduced around guns. Use training dummies early and often. The more you train, the more impressed you will be! Make sure your dog is trained and is comfortable in a boat BEFORE hunting. Practice retrieving dummies in the boat. Make sure he knows how to go in and out of the boat successfully.
This should not be difficult, a retriever's natural instincts are to RETRIEVE. Make sure you praise a lot for retrieving , a dog LOVES to please its owner
